TOWARD THE STUDY OF BAYAN BULAG ANCIENT SETTLEMENT IN MONGOLIA’S SOUTH GOBI AIMAG

Konovalov P. B.

This article presents the results of a reconnaissance trip to examine a poorly studied Xiongnu settlement in the locality Bayan Bulag in the territory of Nomgon somon of Mongolia’s South Gobi aimag. The object is situated deep in the Gobi desert in a real oasis rich with water sources. The remnants of an ancient town in a form of a fragmented fortified wall are found upon a terrace-like ledge of the desert landscape. Under the terrace from where the local springs flow down there are traces of a lower part of the  settlement. Amidst the matter excavated from the settlement surface the author noticed some Khitan ceramics. It is assumed that this place hides not just the remnants of a Xiongnu settlement, but may also reveal traces of Khitans and later dwellers of medieval Mongolia.
